Dean Francis is eyeing a super fight with Antonio Tarver after halting Ayitey Powers at Bristol’s Ashton Gate stadium last night. Francis collected the vacant IBO Inter-Continental title which will put him in line for a crack at the full IBO crown which is due to be contested by Tarver and Elvir Muriqi this Saturday. Tarver would be a dream fight for Dean but the 38-year-old has bigger fish to fry at the tail end of his career – Joe Calzaghe, Clinton Woods or Chad Dawson, for example.
Back to reality and Francis was forced to work hard to overcome Powers. The Ghanaian recovered from a fourth round knockdown to come back into the fight until his resistance was finally ended at 2.59 of the ninth after he was decked again. Ayitey’s plucky performance was a surprise after he was forced to lose 3lbs after initially hitting the scales at 12st10lbs at Friday’s weigh-in. Read the rest of this entry »
