Weekend round-up

It was an excellent weekend for three golden oldies who kept alive their careers away from the glare of the television cameras.
The most impressive result belonged to Ryan Rhodes. The former British light-middleweight champion required only 89 seconds to blast out the previously once beaten Paul Buchanan in Barnsley yesterday, flooring the shell-shocked Geordie twice before forcing the referee to intervene. Martin Power’s British bantamweight title defence against Jason Booth is back on again. The pair were originally slated to meet on June 15 in Crystal Palace until Power pulled out citing “personal problems”. Power’s decision prompted promoter Frank Maloney to draft in Ajose Olusegun and Gary Reid to contest the vacant Commonwealth light-welterweight crown as the show’s replacement main event.
But after a change of heart, or through some gentle persuasion, Power will now defend against Booth on July 6 at the Altrincham Leisure Centre, just three weeks later than originally planned. Martin hasn’t defended his British crown since stopping Isaac Ward in eight rounds last May. Since then his unbeaten record and confidence have been dented following two back-to-back losses to Tshifhiwa Munyai for the Commonwealth title. Read the rest of this entry »
