Bernard Dunne will face a blast from the past when he makes the second defence of his European super-bantamweight crown against Reidar “The Viking” Walstad at Dublin’s Point Theatre on June 23. The two previously met in the European Amateur Championships and it was the Norwegian Walstad who emerged victorious over a then 17-year-old Dunne.
The Viking, who has established a reputation as a hard hitter, is ranked third in Europe and is regarded by some as Dunne’s toughest test to date. The challenger boasts a medal littered amateur record and has won 14 of his 16 bouts in the pro ranks. Read the rest of this entry »

Hennessy Sports have regrettably cancelled their promotion in Montreal on July 6th following the unfortunate withdrawal of John Murray from the headline contest. The lightweight – who made history by becoming the first ever Brit to win a WBC World Youth Championship – was due to defend his title against tough Texan prospect Noel Rodriguez, but has been left unable to train after coming off his bike in training and sustaining a head injury.
It would have been the fourth occasion on which the 22-year old has competed on the other side of the pond. He impressively out-pointed Johnny Walker in Florida in August 2005, before stopping Tyrone Wiggins in Quebec just two months later. Most recently he stood out on the Mayweather-de la Hoya mega bill when stopping Lorenzo Bethea in seven. Read the rest of this entry »

World Boxing Council (WBC) number one-ranked contender David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye has responded to claims made by promoter Frank Warren in his weekly News Of The World column by insisting, “I don’t need Warren and Enzo – they need me!”
The 26-year-old Haye – currently preparing for a late summer showdown with division number one Jean-Marc Mormeck – has once again incurred the wrath of Warren in his Sunday column. This time the accusations centre on Haye rejecting a Warren offer for the Londoner to box domestic rival Enzo Maccarinelli on July 21. Read the rest of this entry »
