Along with Wigan continuing in Premiership football next year, the city’s Robin Park Arena now hosts championship boxing for the first time when London based Martin Power defends his British bantamweight title against Jason Booth next month.
Since turning pro in 2001, Power has never fought out of the South East and his only trip away from London was to Portsmouth in 2003 when he defeated Dave Hinds over four rounds.
Not only does Power, 19-2 (8), now have to travel away from his beloved London, but he must take on Jason Booth, 27-4 (10), the former IBO super flyweight, British and Commonwealth flyweight champion who remains unbeaten since his return to the ring last year. Read the rest of this entry »

American Jill Emery made Irish history on Saturday night when she became the first ever winner of an Irish hosted professional female fight. Emery won every round of her welterweight contest defeating London based Russian Angel McKenzie by a referee’s score of 80-72 following eight rounds of action.
The shamrock sporting Pittsburgh native already boasts an impressive CV and displayed all her boxing talents on the way to an emphatic victory on the undercard of Bernard Dunne’s European title defence against Reidar Walstad. Read the rest of this entry »

Bernard Dunne took another step towards achieving his world title dream when he successfully defended his European super-bantamweight title against Reidar Walstad in front of another sell out Point Theatre crowd in Dublin on Saturday night.
The Dubliner produced a master class performance en-route to a unanimous points victory (118-111, 116-112 and 115-113) much to the delight of the most partisan and vocal following in Irish boxing. Dunne boxed with poise and skill to overcome the challenge of the ever advancing Viking, his stiff left jab and fast hands left the Norwegian badly bruised and enabled a relatively easy victory for the Irish puncher. Unbeaten prospect on Frank Maloney’s Johanneson – Kirakosyan European Title card
John Fewkes’ career has stepped up a gear with the announcement of his bout with skilful Tontcho Tontchev, 37-5 (21), at the Metrodome in Barnsley, England on July 13. Fewkes, 14-0 (2), has been taken along slowly since his first appearance in September 2004 which resulted in a second round stoppage of Mark Dane.
This victory was the first of 14 consecutive successes for the Glyn Rhodes managed 21 year old light welter and Rhodes believes former European champion Tontchev is an ideal opponent. Read the rest of this entry »
