Ian Napa has been handed the opportunity to win a Lonsdale belt outright when he defends his British bantamweight crown against Colin Moffett at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham on May 2. Rendall Munroe’s first defence of his European super-bantamweight title against Salem Bouaita tops the bill. Plucky Napa finally became British champion at the third time of asking by avenging a previous loss to Jason Booth on points last July. He has since retained it through forcing Lee Haskins to retire through injury and by decisioning former British champion Martin Power in November, who had controversially beaten Napa on a split decision in 2005.
Belfast’s Moffett is the reigning Irish bantamweight champion and captured the title with a revenge eighth-round stoppage victory over the previously unbeaten Eugene Heagney (who had previously outpointed him) in December. The Irishman’s record at 8-11-4 is decidedly patchy though and his title shot highlights the lack of depth in Britain’s 8st 6lbs division. Moffett has won three of his last five but once went ten fights without registering a win (8 defeats and 2 draws) in a dreadful run beteeen 1999 and 2004.
