Junior Witter has been installed as the mandatory challenger for Gianluca Branco’s European light-welterweight crown as he looks to rebuild his career after losing his WBC world title in an upset to Tim Bradley last month. The EBU have stipulated an August 16 deadline for an agreement to be reached between both parties to stage the contest. In all likelihood, the fight will probably go out to purse bids.
Italy’s Branco recently captured the European title by controversially outpointing Hornchurch’s Colin Lynes on a split decision in Turin last month after recovering from a second round knockdown. Given Italy’s nortorious reputation for gifting decisions to its fellow countrymen, Witter will be hoping that his promoter Mick Hennessy can secure him home advantage for what amounts to a must-win fight at this stage in the 34-year-old’s career.
