Joe Calzaghe has stunned Britain’s boxing fraternity by revealing to the South Wales Argus that he wishes to end his association with promoter Frank Warren after 12 years. Calzaghe intends to be self-managed for the remainder of his career, which is expected to include one more fight against former pound-for-pound great Roy Jones Jr before the 36-year-old hangs up his gloves later this year.
Calzaghe’s decision is likely to stun Warren who has delivered the Welshman the major fights he has always craved against Jeff Lacy, Mikkel Kessler and Bernard Hopkins in the last three years. Calzaghe’s victories have established him as a major attraction on both sides of the Atlantic and the undefeated Welsh dragon is determined to cash in during one final career swansong, expected to be against Jones. DAVID Barnes and Barry Morrison will meet in the main event of Matchroom Sport’s next boxing show.
Barnes, the current British Light-Welterweight Champion, will put his title on the line as he looks to make his first defence. Scotsman Barry Morrison, who has also previously held the belt, will be his opponent in what should be a thrilling night of boxing.
