Gammer gets unlucky break in Germany

Wales’ Scott Gammer’s comeback ended in unfortunate fashion when he retired at the end of the eighth round after breaking his right hand during the second session of his vacant EU heavyweight title clash against Francesco Pianeta in Berlin on Saturday night. The pair fought on the undercard of Nikolay Valuev’s WBA heavyweight title-winning effort over John Ruiz.

The 31-year-old Gammer announced his retirement after being outpointed by John McDermott in a British title eliminator last year but has since had a change of heart, and despite fighting with one-hand from round two onwards he more than held his own against the unbeaten Pianceta who failed to justify his reputation of a heavyweight prospect worth monitoring.
