Scott Haywood has relinquished his English light-welterweight title and pulled out of next week’s scheduled defence against Lenny Daws after landing a shot at Ajose Olusegun’s Commonwealth crown in Barnsley on February 27.
Daws will now meet Wolverhampton’s Dean Harrison for the vacant English title in a contest that forms the chief support to John Murray’s British lightweight title defence against Lee McAllister at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan next Saturday (Jan 17).
The 25-year-old Harrison has only suffered one defeat in 14 contests and that came narrowly on points (97-96) against Haywood when he previously challenged for the English title in a rousing contest back in September. Harrison took the fight on short notice after Nigel Wright vacated and was only beaten after Haywood produced a strong finish in the tenth and final round to secure the title.
Once more Harrison’s big chance has arrived at less than a fortnight’s notice but it is an opportunity that is too good to turn down in a competitive domestic light-welterweight division. The 30-year-old Daws is desperate to regain his British title after losing it in his first defence against Scotland’s Barry Morrison two years ago on a split decision.
The man from Morden was then held to a draw against Nigel Wright when challenging for Wright’s English title in November 2007, an opponent he had previously comfortably outpointed when capturing the British title 18 months earlier. Daws, 17-1-1 (6), has won his last two though, outpointing Mihaita Mutu and Jay Morris.
